Des Moines Art Center
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The Des Moines Art Center combines galleries by three great 20C architects. Eliel Saarinen's original museum building (1949) hugs a hilltop perch and encircles a reflecting pool. Its galleries house the center's collection of late-19C and early-20C art. Dark and echoey, the first addition (1968), by I.M. Pei, was designed specially for large works of sculpture. Richard Meier designed the most recent wing (1986), which contains Julian Schnabel's massive mixed-media work, The Death of Fashion; and contemporary pieces by Andy Warhol and Frank Stella.
