This mint, one of four in the country, houses a quarter of America's gold reserves as Denver, located in the centre of the country, is less vulnerable to earthquakes and wartime attack. The elegant, five-storey granite and marble building (1906, James Knox Taylor) displays exhibitions of coins, minting equipment and historical photos. Organised tours (reservation required) include a visit to the stamping and counting rooms.
