Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia

The Michelin Guide's review
This small sanctuary was dedicated to Gaia in the Mycenaean era. Around 650 BC the cult of Athena imposed itself. As the pilgrims en route to the Pythia passed here first, the sanctuary was given the epithet pronaia ("before the temple"). Little remains of the sanctuary of the two goddesses, but the foundation of the 4C BC tholos (circular temple) has been reconstructed. Nearby, a small rectangle on the ground, among the stone blocks, indicates the demolished temple of Athena.
