The Michelin Guide's review
The inhabitants of Delhi call this district, which corresponds to the town founded in the 17C by Emperor Shah Jahan, "Old Delhi" (Purani Dilli), despite the fact that many other districts in the capital are actually older than this one. The town was once surrounded by walls, large sections of which have survived (to the east), and was the last of the successive Delhis to be built before the construction of "New Delhi" by the British. The district is now the only one of these towns that is sufficiently uniform to give the impression of being a town within a town.
