The rice terraces of the Yao village of Dazhai in the Jinkeng region are well worth a visit. The walk through the rice fields is not as well signposted as at Ping'an, so you might like to take a leisurely stroll through the magnificent landscapes with a local Yao guide. In the very poor village of Dazhai, the animals live on the ground floor of the houses, while the inhabitants occupy the first floor. Some of the families will cook you a meal for a handful of yuans and there are a few basic guesthouses perched above the village.
