Newbattle Abbey
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The building that encompasses the remains of a Cistercian abbey founded by David I in 1440 stands on the western banks of the South Esk. The monks were the first to mine the local coal deposits and extended their activities to salt extraction, soon positioning themselves at the forefront of agricultural techniques. The monks' skills made the abbey one of the most powerful in Scotland. Today, it is occupied by a college.
