Crazy Horse Memorial
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The world's largest sculpted monument (172m/564ft) is an effigy of the Sioux Chief Crazy Horse (1842-1877) mounted upon his steed. The warrior's face, higher than the Sphinx, was completed in 1998. This colossal undertaking began in 1948 when the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) was invited by Sioux chiefs to create a work to complement Mt. Rushmore so that "the white man knows that the red man has great heroes, too." Ziolkowski's family continues to work on the project today.
