The Michelin Guide's review
The sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos is interesting on three levels. Firstly, the church (1769-1773), whose white façade is fronted by an alley of imperial palm trees; architect Francisco Lima Cerqueira innovated here by creating a single nave flanked by towers set back from the façade. Also look out for the statues on the forecourt and finally the six Stations of the Cross chapels by Burle Marx (1974). The site is at its most beautiful in the evenings when it is magnificently lit up.
