The Michelin Guide's review
Partly built between 1088 and 1130, the Basilica St-Pierre-et-St-Paul was sacked during the Revolution, demolished and sold off stone by stone. What had for a long time been the largest church in Christendom is now but a few meagre fragments. What remains, notably the Eau-Bénite bell tower, does, however, give an idea of the reach and the wealth of this centre of Christianity, and its influence on the religious, intellectual, political and artisitic life of the whole of Western society.
