The Michelin Guide's review
This island of meadows, sandy beaches and rugged cliffs was the lair of the notorious pirate queen, Grace O'Malley. Cromwell later captured Inishbofin, garrisoned it and detained prisoners here. At the foot of Cromwell's fort is a stone - visible at low tide. Rebels were chained to it and as the tide came in they drowned, under the gaze of their fellow detainees. At the eastern tip of the island, near the abbey ruins, you can still see gravestones dating back to the 7C.
