The Michelin Guide's review
Located in an industrial district on the far South Side, this fascinating working class community was created by railroad sleeping car magnate George Pullman in 1881. Pullman built his new factory-town on 200ha, 20km south of Chicago. The economic depression in the 1890s brought wage cuts, and in order to keep the town profitable, Pullman raised rent and food prices. This led to revolt among employees, bringing about the end of the workers' city.
