The Michelin Guide's review
Situated in the far north of the country, the Golden Triangle was, and still is, infamous as a major centre for the production of heroin. Its name originates from the precious metal used by traffickers to purchase opium. These days, poppy cultivation is in decline and trekkers are slowly replacing drug smugglers in the region, which nonetheless retains a certain adventurous feel. The area is also home to a large number of different ethnic minority groups.
