The Michelin Guide's review
Situated on an island on the Dee, the impressive and sinister ruins of this castle symbolise the troubles and insecurity that reigned in medieval Scotland. This stronghouse was the citadel of the very powerful and aristocratic family of the Black Douglas. Built in the 14C, the castle was dismantled in 1640 when it feel again into the hands of the Covenantarists after a prolonged siege.
