The square is the beating heart of the town and contains the main municipal buildings, which are all Baroque. The church, Igreja de Santa Maria, houses a sacred art museum, exhibiting superb wooden and stone statues. Opposite is the old Santo Amaro Hospital. The 17C Casa da Torre is recognisable by its small corner turret. In the centre, to the right of the church, is the town hall, which dates from the late 17C.
