The Michelin Guide's review
Sixteen of the 21 original bastions (baluartes) are still standing along the 11km of ramparts that surround Cartagena. You can access the fortifications from Baluarte de San Francisco Javier, behind the Plaza de San Pedro Claver, and follow them as far as Puente Román, at the end of Getsemaní district. At Baluarte de Santa Catalina, come down to street level to see the Bóvedas. The Baluarte de San José has preserved its impressive battery of 12 cannons that used to protect Getsemaní.
