Tor House
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Overlooking Carmel Bay, this enchanting stone complex embodies the spirit of its builder, poet Robinson Jeffers, whose writing was inspired by the raw beauty of the Pacific coast. Jeffers and his wife settled in Carmel in 1914, and in 1918 work was begun on a small home on the tor, or rock promontory, of Carmel Point. Over the years Jeffers expanded Tor-House into a cluster of low stone buildings.Furnished with Jeffers' belongings, the home today comprises the original small parlor, a vaulted dining room, and the small bedroom where Jeffers died in 1962 at age 75. The whimsical Hawk Tower contains his desk and chair.
