The Michelin Guide's review
This 12C Benedictine abbey was given to Admiral Lord Nelson by Ferdinand III in 1799, to thank him for his assistance in fighting the Bourbons of Naples. Nelson's descendants later transformed the castle into a sumptuous private residence. The adjoining chapel boasts an attractive doorway and houses a Byzantine icon, which, according to legend, is a 13C copy of an original brought to the abbey by the condottiere (mercenary leader) Giorgio Maniace in 1040.
