The Michelin Guide's review
The stairway that leads to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Portugal's most famous Baroque monuments. Carved from austere grey granite, it is representative of the Baroque style of northern Portugal and stands out against the white of its limewashed walls. The sanctuary itself, built by Carlos Amarante between 1784 and 1811, is in the neo-Classical style.
