The Michelin Guide's review
Recognized as the masterpiece of architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-86), this imposing granite and sandstone pile (1877) initiated the popular style known as Richardsonian Romanesque. A massive central tower dominates the church, but it is the west porch that catches the eye with its carved statues and biblical friezes. The church's cool, dark interior is brightened by lavish painting by John La Farge.
