The Michelin Guide's review
These lofty noble towers are a reminder of the conflicts that once took place between families supporting either the Guelphs or the Ghibellines. The tallest one, the Asinelli tower, dates from 1109 and is almost 100m in height: climb its 486 steps to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city (despite the protective structures now in place). The Garisenda tower, which is considerably shorter (just 50m high), is definitely leaning!
