The Michelin Guide's review
The picturesque Piazza di Porta Ravegnana is dominated by two lofty noble towers, the Asinelli and the Garisenda, which have survived from a period when Bologna had over a hundred of these towers. Built by noble families as an external sign of wealth and power, the towers also had a military role, keeping a watchful eye over the surrounding area.
