Biggar Gasworks Museum
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This museum describes the gasworks which were commonplace before the advent of natural gas. From 1839 to 1973, coal was used to produce gas. The process consisted of heating coal for 6 hours in cast-iron, refractory clay or silica ovens to distil gas which was then washed, cleaned, purified and stored in tanks, once a familiar site in many towns and cities.
