Mariannenplatz is bordered to the west, by a former hospital built in 1845-47 by Theodor Stein for the Order of Deaconesses. It was abandoned and became a squat from the 1970s onwards; it now houses a cultural centre, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, which organises numerous activities, while maintaining the experimental character of the squat years.
