The Michelin Guide's review
Perched on a black rock surrounded by sand and lapped at by the turbulent waters of high tide, this temple dedicated to the sea deities seems to defy the elements. It is thought to have been erected in the 16C under the aegis of the famous Javanese Brahman Danghyang Nirartha, who was spellbound by the beauty of the site. As the rock base threatened to collapse, it was consolidated in 1980 and a third of it is now artificial rock. The small cliff that runs along the side of the beach affords superb views.
