The Michelin Guide's review
Built by John Webb over the years 1654-1668, Belvoir Castle was transformed into a romantic "castle on a hill" by James Wyatt in the early 19C. The Ballroom contains Thomas Becket's illuminated breviary. The rococo Elizabeth Saloon has a gilt and painted ceiling and the Regent's Gallery is hung with immense Gobelin tapestries. Sumptuous paintings, including The Seven Sacraments by Nicolas Poussin and The Woodcutter's House by Thomas Gainsborough.
