Museu de Art Sacra, Belém
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
The Jesuits built Santo Alexandre College near the fort shortly after Belém was founded, and the building later became an Episcopal palace. Nowadays, it houses the Museum of Sacred Art. The tour starts with the splendid and resolutely Baroque Santo Alexandre Church. Note the wooden altarpieces and pulpits, engraved by Indian apprentices who clearly already had great skills in woodwork. On the first floor of the former Episcopal palace is a fine collection of sacred sculptures made of polychrome wood.
