The Michelin Guide's review
The Gate of Supreme Harmony, without doubt the most ornately decorated in the Forbidden City, is guarded by two imposing bronze lions, the symbol of the highest-ranking dignitaries of the State. It was built for the first time in 1420, then completely reconstructed under the Qing dynasty following a fire in 1888. The rosewood ceilings are entirely decorated with gilded dragons (the symbols of the emperor), while the door, which opens out onto the exterior courtyard, was built without any screws or nails.
