The Michelin Guide's review
Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (or of Swabia) reigned over the Puglia in the early 13C and was responsible for its Golden Age. In 1233, he had this castle built on former Byzantine and Norman foundations. Although the building was modified and strengthened in the 16C, you can still see the great trapezoidal courtyard and two towers dating from the Swabian era.
