To reach Baracoa by the overland route, visitors travel along a mountain road called La Farola. Prior to its construction during the 1960s, a major technical feat, the town was only accessible by sea. The route crosses the Sierra del Purial, rich in tropical vegetation, which may be enjoyed at the mirador de Alto de Cotilla lying at its very heart.
