Caerlaverock Castle
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Protected by moats and earth ramparts, the substantial ruins of Caerlaverock Castle are situated in pleasant verdant landscape on the north side of the Solway estuary. This formidable medieval fortress (13C) has an attractive inner façade (1634), its windows and door pediments embellished with heraldry and mythological scenes; an early example of the Scots Renaissance style.
