The Michelin Guide's review
The main claim to fame of this Cistercian abbey, now in ruins and founded in the 12C, is its sculptures, depicting enigmatic heads, effigies and floral motifs, in which botanists have identified several medicinal plants probably grown by the monks. Perhaps as a tongue-in-cheek reference to this know-how, the abbey is called "St Mary of the Fertile Rock", which is rather amusing given its position by the Burren!
