The Michelin Guide's review
The "flagship" of the monastery, this church was built in 1604 by master masons from the Rhodopes on a cruciform plan, topped by a dome and preceded by a narthex decorated with superb frescoes painted in 1643. The lavish interior is breathtaking on account of its rich and abundant decor. It houses the Georgian icon of the Virgin and Child, lost when the monks where massacred in 1450 but miraculously found in a cave by a shepherd on Easter Monday 1604, and the object of particular veneration.
