The Michelin Guide's review
With 88 towers, nine gateways and various posterns, the battlements around Ávila form a belt with a circumference of over 2 500m. A matchless testimonial to medieval fortifications, they date from the 11C and have retained a unified appearance. The best place for an overall view of the site is the lookout known as Cuatro Postes ("Four Posts"), on the Salamanca road. But you can also walk along a section of the sentry path on the top of the walls.
