The Michelin Guide's review
Situated in a region dotted with pine woods, Averbode Abbey was founded by the Order of Prémontré in 1134-35. The abbey is still occupied by the order, who make beer, cheese and gingerbread here. Entrance to the courtyard is through a 14C porch, while the beautiful abbey church dates from the 17C. The abbey buildings were burned down in 1942, except for the 18C cloister, chapter-house and sacristy adorned with fine woodwork.
