It is impossible to have an overall view from the earth banks reinforced by an inner ditch that surround the 11.5ha of the site. They enclose a circle of some 100 sarsens and two inner rings. From the passage, an avenue lined by pairs of stones (some have disappeared), male symbols (squat stones) and female symbols (slender stones), led to a burial site known as the Sanctuary.
