The Michelin Guide's review
The Theatre of Dionysus is the cradle of Ancient Greek theatre, where all the masterpieces by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were staged. Plays were performed in rudimentary wooden theatres prior to the establishment of this site; the stone theatre dates back to the 4C BC and owes its current form to the Romans. Make sure you climb to the top of the terraces, where you will be struck by the theatre's sense of space (almost 17 000 could once be accommodated here) and intimacy.
