The Michelin Guide's review
Spanning more than 6 000km2, the largest artificial lake in the world was created when Nasser had the Aswan High Dam constructed. The idea was to protect the area from the swelling Nile and to irrigate new land. Numerous temples had to be moved out of the reach of the rising waters. The lake has become a refuge for migratory birds, fish, crocodiles and other creatures. From Aswan you can embark on a cruise to Abu Simbel, where you can discover its fascinating landscapes.
