The Michelin Guide's review
Mount Rainier, the highest volcano in the Cascades and the fifth highest peak in the United States (excluding Alaska), is protected by a national park. A veritable arctic peak in the middle of a temperate zone, 88km2/34sq mi of its summit is covered by snow and ice. The meltwater from its 25 glaciers dissects the surrounding landscape with fast-flowing streams, while volcanic activity has created a labyrinth of ice caves. To the east of the park, at an altitude of 1 951m/6 400ft, Sunrise boasts some truly stunning views.
