The Michelin Guide's review
The original Norman gatehouse and keep have survived 750 years of assaults and sieges, unlike the lower bailey which was largely rebuilt between 1875 and 1900. The castle has some extremely fine Victorian rooms, including the Chapel and Barons' Hall, with portraits by Mytens, Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Reynolds. A silver icon by Fabergé and a portrait of Richard III take pride of place in the Gothic Revival library.
