Royal Saltworks, Arc-et-Senans

Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Industrial site
The Michelin Guide's review
The grandiose royal saltworks (18C) are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This showpiece of industrial architecture, built by the architect Ledoux, forms a harmonious semicircle. Laid out around a vast courtyard, each building (workshops, staff accommodation) is arranged symmetrically around the director's house, whose columned façade alternates square and cylindrical drums. Ledoux' scale models are housed in the coopers' building.
