The Michelin Guide's review
Overlooking the narrow streets of the lower old town, Ankara's citadel is very well preserved and still boasts a small district of beautiful wooden Ottoman houses, painted in blue, within its walls. This delightful district also has lovely views of the town. The citadel is defended by two lines of fortifications (7C and 8C) built mostly from stone taken from the ancient town. Through the lower wall, which is 1 500m long and dotted with 14 towers, the citadel is entered via the Hisar Gate, a huge tower adorned with a clock.
