The Michelin Guide's review
The central station, a spectacular neo-Renaissance structure with a red-brick façade built between 1881 and 1889, rests on three artificial islands and 8 700 piles. Designed by architects Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) and Adolf Leonard van Gendt (1835-1901) as a monumental gateway, the station marked the entrance to the city in the industrial era.
