The Michelin Guide's review
Work began on the church in 1506, on the site of a previous sanctuary that had been built over the mosque when the town was reconquered, and it was the first church to be consecrated in the Kingdom of Grenada. The freestone of the great mosque that once stood here can still be made out on the south façade. The Baroque doorway that you can see today, by Enrique Egas, hides the early Gothic façade decorated with gargoyles and whimsical animals. The fairly simple interior has a single nave and is topped with quite a complex cross vault.
