The Michelin Guide's review
This imposing, Palladian-style stone house was built in 1753 for John Carlyle, one of the Scottish entrepreneurs who was instrumental in founding Alexandria. The mansion's hour of glory came in April 1755, when the British general, Edward Braddock, headquartered himself here en route to his ill-fated campaign against the French and Indians. Fine period interior and pleasant garden.
