The Michelin Guide's review
More than 20 000 petroglyphs, scratched or chipped into basalt along a 17mi lava escarpment (the West Mesa), chronicle the lives of countless Native American generations in this sacred site. The stone carvings represent humans, animals and ceremonial activities. Most have been carved since AD 1300, although some are thought to be over 3 000 years old. Each of the four areas is accessible via car.
