The Michelin Guide's review
The temple was built around 480 BC to celebrate Agrigento's victory over the Carthaginians at Himera. Never completed, it is nonetheless one of the largest temples ever built in ancient times. Its entablature was supported by 20m-high half-columns alternating with telamons - giant male figures. One of these has been reconstructed on the ground in the middle of the temple, and will give you an idea of the sheer size of the monument.
