Santa Maria do Castelo Church
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
Rebuilt in the 15C, Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo is also known as Panteão dos Almeida because it houses the tombs of the Abrantes Counts (15C and 16C), the finest of which are examples of the florid Gothic style. Now an attractive museum, the church has several remarkable pieces, including fragments of frescoes, sculpture and Spanish-Moorish azulejos from the 16C. Sacred art exhibitions are organised here on a regular basis.
