The Michelin Guide's review
This Chand Baori is one of the oldest and most impressive stepwells in Rajasthan. It was built in the 8th century and is around 30 metres wide and deep, forming a 13-storey inverted pyramid with 3,500 pink sandstone steps. One of the walls of the well is made up of several superimposed temples, underlining the building's dual utilitarian and sacred purpose. The impeccable geometry of the motifs, the play of perspective and the contrasts of light and shadow make this a place of hypnotic beauty.
