  The Michelin Guide's review
This handsome market cross, or mercat cross, adorned with a unicorn dates from 1686. Its name is a reminder that in the Middle Ages the market was held at Castlegate, that is to say, the gait (from gata, a Viking word meaning "path") leading to the castle. The frieze surrounding it is composed of oval panels containing ten portraits of the Stuart monarchs, from James I to James VII. The series ends with the royal and the Aberdeen armouries.
