The Michelin Guide's review
Off the northeastern coast of Scotland, there are nearly 70 Orkney Islands, although most of the inhabitants live on Mainland Island. Neolithic inhabitants left standing stones and tombs while the Vikings bequeathed a language and tombs to the archipelago. Nature fans will be drawn to the nesting areas of the seabirds on the cliffs and the vision of seals and otters basking on the rocks. Orkney attracts visitors as much for its history as for its remarkable natural heritage.
